Taking a Stand to Safeguard Our Family’s Digital Privacy: A Personal Journey #ShareAwesome

Must read

Despite my tech-savvy nature, there’s a clear boundary I won’t cross when it comes to safeguarding my family’s online security. My Tech Savvy Mama brand necessitates a constant online presence, but I meticulously curate this image to protect my family’s privacy. I conscientiously assess apps, websites, and new social media tools, scrutinizing them for features that could compromise our privacy while remaining cautious about the information I disclose.

There’s a rationale behind why I request my children to remove their school spirit attire before photographing them with a product intended for my blog or capturing their thoughts for a YouTube video. I avoid revealing the name of their school. There’s a reason I refrain from leaving our neighborhood’s Yahoo Group to join a new communication tool that necessitates address verification for membership. I also refrain from joining the Facebook page for my kids’ school, not only because who has time for another Facebook Group, but also because it discloses their primary location when they’re not with me. I have my geolocation services turned off on my phone when I’m at home; otherwise, it’s like sharing a Google Maps link to our house. There’s a reason why we’ve always had age-appropriate conversations to educate our kids about digital safety.

Although a significant part of my life is public, there’s an ardent desire to keep a substantial portion of it private for the sake of my kids. As fellow parents, I’m sure you can relate. Ultimately, we always want what’s best for our children, and their safety is a top priority. Yet, preserving their digital footprint in this hyperconnected world we live in can be quite challenging.

In today’s world, we’re continuously connected, using digital technology for learning, staying in touch with friends, enjoying new gaming apps, and simplifying our lives through online shopping and money-saving apps. While technology brings numerous benefits and incredible opportunities, every family must contemplate certain aspects to make informed and safe choices.

The National PTA has collaborated with LifeLock to provide valuable ways for families to foster an open and evolving dialogue about making positive, safe choices when using digital tools. It’s all part of leading a happy, healthy lifestyle—for you, your family, your friends, and the entire world. Everyone benefits when we #ShareAwesome! The #ShareAwesome campaign aims to promote the understanding that regardless of the device, app, or social network—online safety and positive behavior mirror what’s needed offline.

The #ShareAwesome contest invites social media users to share smart and safe decisions, remarkable achievements, or acts of kindness using the hashtag #ShareAwesome on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. To participate, simply post a photo before November 30, 2014, to be eligible for incredible prizes, including tablets and a $2,500 scholarship! You can find more information at ShareAwesomeNow.org.

I admire that #ShareAwesome celebrates students and families who utilize digital media and tools for good—good for themselves, their family, their friends, and the global community. It promotes positivity and thoughtfulness as we endeavor to nurture the next generation of responsible digital citizens.

Just remember to kindly remind your kids to disable geotagging before sharing their photos!
